Ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 is a feature-rich and powerful product. But it misses the boat in one essential area of photo management: effective photo tagging and searching.

The program's Window Explorer–style interface, with directories listed down the side, means you'll need to keep your files organized in a good directory structure. Photo Explorer's tagging and searching capabilities are all but absent. You're limited to classifying photos into three categories, cleverly named A, B, and C, and adding free-form descriptions to the pictures one at a time. There isn't a simple way to add keywords to groups of images.

On a much more positive note, if you store your images on CDs, Photo Explorer can scan them and store thumbnails in a virtual CD folder that mirrors the directory structure of the original CDs. When you click a thumbnail of an off-line image, the program will prompt you for the particular CD the image is stored on.

Photo Explorer has by far the best slide show creation tools. You simply drag and drop thumbnails from any of your directories into the slide sorter window, which is similar to the storyboard editor in video-editing programs. The program lets you move thumbnails around in this window to reorder them. Drop an MP3 file onto the media bar, choose your transitions, and your presentation is complete.

More important, Photo Explorer offers a host of options for saving and distributing your slide shows. You can burn them to CD, create VCDs (a format that can be played on most DVD players), save slide shows as Windows screen savers, or publish them to the Web.
